Copenhagen Weather

This is the most important thing to remember: no matter when you’re visiting Copenhagen, be prepared for anything. Beautiful sunshine can quickly turn into pouring rain, followed by strong winds, then back to clear skies again—all within an hour.

That doesn’t mean the weather is always bad. Quite the opposite! Copenhagen weather is changeable, but not extreme. Summers aren’t scorching hot, and winters rarely get truly cold. The Danish capital has a mild oceanic climate, shaped by winds from the Atlantic Ocean. Rain is common, but it usually doesn’t last all day—expect short showers, sometimes several times a day.

In summer, temperatures almost never rise above 82°F (28°C), even on the hottest days. In winter, it’s rare for it to drop below 28°F (–2 to –3°C).

One more thing to note: for some reason, it almost always feels a few degrees warmer than the thermometer says. Two quick examples:

  • Last summer, when it was 82°F (28°C) in Copenhagen, it felt just as hot and sweaty as 90–95°F (32–35°C) elsewhere.
  • Today, both Copenhagen and Budapest had 55°F (13°C). Here, we were walking around comfortably in T-shirts and jackets with the windows open, while friends in Budapest said they had to turn the heat on.

Spring (March–May)

It never gets truly cold in Copenhagen, and in spring, freezing temperatures are almost nonexistent. Even around 32°F (0°C) is rare. March can still be a bit chilly, but by April, sightseeing becomes really enjoyable. By late April, daytime highs are around 50–59°F (10–15°C), and in May, it often reaches 64–68°F (18–20°C), especially when the sun is out.

Summer (June–August)

Summer in Copenhagen is short but lovely. July is the warmest month, with daily highs typically between 68 and 77°F (20–25°C). As mentioned before, it tends to feel warmer than it sounds. Even in summer, nights can be cool, so it’s smart to pack at least one pair of long pants and a sweater.

The long, light evenings are truly magical this time of year. Between June and August, it’s still bright out even at 10 PM.

Fall (September–November)

September often still feels like summer in Copenhagen, especially early in the month. October is cooler and windier, but the city’s colorful leaves and cozy fall atmosphere make it worth visiting. By November, the days are often damp and cloudy, with less sunshine overall.

Winter (December–February)

Winter isn’t very cold, but it is dark and often damp. Daytime temperatures rarely drop below 30°F (–1 to –3°C), and snowfall usually only sticks around for a few days. The cold is mostly felt through the wind and the early sunset—around 3 or 4 PM. Danes get through it with “hygge” vibes: candles, warm drinks, and cozy homes.

That said, Copenhagen is still a great destination in winter. The Christmas markets, decorated Strøget, and charming cafés—plus a warm coat and sweater—make the weather perfectly manageable.

What to Pack

Layered clothing and a raincoat or waterproof jacket are must-haves in almost every season in Copenhagen. A small umbrella might help, but with all the wind, a hood is usually more reliable. Even in summer, it’s smart to bring a warm sweater or jacket, and in winter, wind protection is just as important as warmth.

On some summer days—especially when the sun is shining—Copenhagen weather can feel very warm, even if the actual temperature isn’t that high. On those days, shorts or a light skirt, a T-shirt, and comfortable shoes are highly recommended.

Copenhagen weather can be unpredictable—but that’s part of the city’s charm. If you’re prepared, you won’t be caught off guard by rain, sudden sunshine, or even the occasional gust of wind. With good shoes, a waterproof jacket, and proper layers for the season, you’ll enjoy this unique city in any kind of weather.
